Project Overview

This project was developed in partnership with both General Mills’ philanthropic arm and Kalona Supernatural, a well-established dairy in Iowa and the most recently accredited US-based, dairy-focused Savory Hub. The project serves the dual purpose of: (1) exploring the opportunities and challenges of scaling regenerative dairy in the US Midwest through the implementation of a pilot project on dairy farms, and (2) helping to accelerate the establishment and capacity-building of the new Kalona Hub through EOV monitor training, HM farmer training and support, and EOV monitoring. In 2022, EOV baseline measurements were conducted on Kalona’s 42 network farms. Participating farmers received in-person HM training and field support from Julie Mettenburg, Hub leader for the neighboring Kansas Hub. Julie also served as mentor for Phil Forbes, hub leader at Kalona, as he seeks to advance his HM accreditation. Plans are underway to explore scaling options in 2023-2024.
