Project Overview
This project aims to showcase how cattle ranching in Brazil can benefit the planet and the farmer. In a region ravaged by deforestation for livestock farming in the past decades, the project provides opportunities for knowledge creation and awareness-raising. A number of qualified organizations have partnered to offer combined expertise in agribusiness, agroforestry, impact investments, and research, so as to create a financially viable, regenerative project with quantifiable impact.
The project will be developed in the Brazilian midwest, in the state of Mato Grosso, about 370 km away from its capital, Cuiabá. The Pasto Vivo (Lively Pasture) project is located in the Jauru watershed (in the Cerrado region), with 60% of its surface covered by livestock. The region has altitudes between 200 and 300 meters, characterized by high temperatures (annual average around 25.0ºC) and an average annual rainfall of 1600 to 1800 mm.
Currently, different cattle ranching practices are adopted by each farm, with emphasis on intensive management with fertilized pasture at Rancho de Couro Farm, and initial field tests of crop-livestock integration with soy at the Alvorada Farm.
At São Benedito, where the project will be implemented, the current production system is traditional cattle ranching with a rough rotating pasture management. In this farm, animals are fed on pasture and supplemented with mineral salt. This production system is representative of livestock management in the region and will serve as a basis for the establishment of the Reference Framework prior to the interventions.
